Inflammation and Cancer

According to the National Institute of Cancer in the US, chronic inflammation is a risk factor for the development and progression of cancer. Over time, chronic inflammation can cause DNA damage and lead to cancer. There can be many causes of chronic inflammation such as infection, gut bacteria imbalance, obesity, smoking, diabetes, toxins, and lack of exercise. One of the main causes that you are able to control is diet.

Food that lowers inflammation fosters healing. Here are some examples of some anti-inflammatory superfoods:

  • All kinds of spices and herbs (eg curcumin, black pepper, rosemary, basil, mint)

  • Extra virgin, cold-pressed olive oil, flaxseed oil, avocados

  • Green leafy vegetables (eg spinach, chard, lettuce, kale, asparagus)

  • Cruciferous vegetables (eg broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage)

  • Allium vegetables (eg onion, garlic, scallions, chives)

  • Antioxidant berries (eg blueberries, blackberries, raspberries)

  • Dark chocolate (no sugar/artificial sugar added)

  • Wild-caught, cold-water fish (if you need animal protein)
